I don't think anyone's mentioned my favorite source for inexpensive spices
and herbs. Here in the southwest you can buy cellophane packets of most
herbs and spices, put out by a couple of different companies, that are
about the same size/weight as the Spice Islands bottles or McCormick/
Schilling-type cans--actually they often contain more--, but cost only .59
- .79. You'll find them in the Mexican food sections or sometimes near the
produce sections of all the major supermarket chains. I just put them in
jars I've saved from various condiments or pricier spices over the years.
However, before anyone asks, I don't know anything about their relative
purity or possible irradiation. I do know they taste fresh and fine and
save me a lot of money.
If I can't find what I want there, I buy in bulk from Reay's, a local
(Tucson & Phoenix) chain-"upscale" market/HFS which is often too pricey
(and pretentious) on many things, but has great and reasonably
priced bulk stuff.
