The following appeared in yesterday's (4/8/98) New York Times:
"New guides to buying organic have arrived in time for the fresh produce
season. The Community Alliance With Family Farmers, a national organization,
has just published this year's "National Organic Directory," which lists
farmers, food distribution companies and manufacturers for organic foods.
"The directory also explains state, national and international guidelines, has
indexes of resource materials and a bibliography. It is $50.95, including
shipping (plus $3.48 sales tax in California), and can be ordered by calling
(800) 852-3832.
"Closer to home, there is "Eating Fresh From the Organic Garden State," edited
by Fran McManus and published by the Northeast Organic Farming Association-New
Jersey. This guide includes an explanation of the proposed federal regulations
on the organic cultivation of food. It also has an excellent directory of
organizations and publications and a list of farms, food processors, markets
and food distributors that produce or sell food that complies with the farming
association's standards.
"About 50 recipes, contributed by restaurants, usually follow the seasons. The
book, $18.85, including postage and tax, is available from the association, 33
Titus Mill Road, Pennington, N.J. 08534."
This seems awfully expensive to me, but may be useful for someone who can
afford it.
