Onions and Rice

Just found a couple interesting articles:
 From Bottom Line Personal:  "For an onion without tears:  Trim the ends off
a large one, place it on a paper towel, microwave on high for one minute,
and remove the skin."
 From Wild Oats:  "Soaking whole rice eight hours or overnight increases its
digestibility and enhances flavor by initiating the germination process. 
Cook rice in soaking water."  Has anyone tried this method?  --Judy E of AZ
