Steaming in a rice cooker?

						
My rice cooker is second hand, so no booklet.  It has a metal plate to fit
in at the top for steaming vegetables.  I've never steamed a vegetable, and
not sure what to do, ie, do I have to put a specific amount of water in the
bottom?  How will I know when they are cooked etc.
