Here's another recipe from the vegetarian cookbook that I'm using
frequently. I've never used TVP before, so that was a new experience. I
find the tvp ingredient interesting, because how could it be unflavored if
it is beef flavored?? I used Bob's Red Mill TVP which I bought at my local
grocery store.

Sloppy Joes

1 3/4 cups hot water
3 cloves garlic -- minced
1 large onion -- chopped
1 green pepper -- diced
2 stalks celery -- diced
6 ounces canned tomato paste
1/2 cup catsup
1 tablespoon prepared yellow mustard
2/3 cup water
1 teaspoon dried basil
1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
1/8 teaspoon red pepper -- up to 1/4
2 tablespoons vegetarian Worcestershire sauce
12 Hamburger buns
Herb and spice blend seasoning -- to taste
Pickles and sweet onions and greens -- as toppings
Nonfat cooking spray

Would you believe that you can be a vegetarian enjoy Sloppy Joes? This
recipe uses TVP (texturized vegetable protein) in place of beef.
In medium-size mixing bowl reconstitute the TVP with the hot water. Stir
to moisten the TVP.
In large kettle sprayed with nonfat cooking spray, saute garlic, onion,
green pepper and celery until soft. Add the TVP, tomato paste, catsup,
mustard, water and seasonings and mix well. Heat to blend flavors and
simmer 5 minutes. Serve on hamburger buns with the condiments of your
choice. This freezes well.
