    I was always under the impression that asafoetida was a natural
spice replacement for garlic.  I purchased it once only to find that I
couldn't stand to even open the bag, the smell was so terrible.  Then
the smell permeated through the brown paper sack it was in and remained
on our counter for days.  Who would even think of putting something in
their food that smells so horrible.  Thanks, but no thanks.
