My first recipe listing and one of my alltime favorites. Taken from
Vefetarian Times September 1994.
1 cup TVP
1/2 container lf tofu
3/4 cup boiling water
1 med green pepper
1 med onion
1 stalk celery minced
1 sm carrot minced (or grated)
1 Tbs molasses
1 1/2 Tbs red wine vinegar
16 oz tomato puree
Couple of garlic cloves minced
1 - 2 Tbs chili powder (to taste)
1/4 tsp hot pepper sauce (to taste) or hot pepper flakes
salt if you want
rolls
In a small bowl combine TVP and water, set aside
In a large, deep skillet heat a sauteing liquid of choice (veggie broth
works well, 1Tbs or two). Add green pepper, onion, celery and carrot;
saute until veggies are soft, about 5 - 7 minutes. Reduce heat to
medium; add TVP, tofu and the rest. Mix, cook stirring occassionaly,
about 3-5 more minutes.
Personally, with this recipe I choose some whole wheat bread and take out
the inside part (like I did as a child) and put the sloppy joes inside.
You can also mix with macaroni for a warm salad. the original recipe
does not call for tofu but I am not a huge TVP fan and like the mixture.
I also play with the veggies and tomato sauce amounts. I have not eaten
ground meat in almost eight years and the recipe is pretty close to my
old memories. ENJOY!!!!
