adapted from The Moosewood Cookbook
I make this about once a week - it is very easy. You can saute the
onions, celery, and garlic first in a little water or vegetable broth,
and save the green pepper until last so it doesn't get mushy, but I
usually just dump everything in the pot at once, and cook. Don't omit
the spices - they really make it taste good.

1 Can Stewed Tomatoes
1 Large Onion -- chopped
3 Cloves Garlic -- minced
1 Cup Celery -- chopped
1/2 Cup Peas -- frozen
2 Large Yams -- in 1/2" cubes
2 Tsp. Paprika
1 Tsp Turmeric
1/2 Tsp Cumin
1/2 Tsp Cinnamon
1 Tsp Salt -- or to taste
4 Cups Water
1 Large Green Pepper -- chopped
1 Can Chickpeas
Pinch Red Pepper -- or to taste
Mix all together in a soup pot and cook until done, 45 minutes to an hour.
Serve with a substantial bread, if desired, and enjoy!
