I don't know hwat the restaurant served you for tempeh bacon, but here is
one easy version.
Slice tempeh on the diagonal, fairly thin slices. "sautee" in soy sauce.
There you go! If you want to get fancier, you could marinate it in soy and
a tiny drop of liquid smoke for that hickory smoke taste. Be careful tho,
the liq smoke is really potent.
