Seaweed and beans

While studying about macrobiotics many years ago I learned about adding kombu 
seaweed to soaking beans.  This is not the same as adding salt to beans - 
they cook beautifully.  I'm sure nori seaweed would be the same.  I hadn't 
heard of nori used in that way, usually it is the wrapper for sushi - vegie 
and non-vegie rolls.
